Julie’s
vessels follow floral forms in nature. They are hand raised with
blows of the hammer from a flat sheet of aluminium. The response
of her materials makes every strike contribute to the final form.
Julie’s jewellery pieces, while retaining a functionality
also share evidence of the process involved in production. Julie
exploits the subtle plays of colour in her work expertly using
a combination of hue and tone to entice the viewer.
Contemporary
metalsmithing is based in handicraft, but too often appears to
suffer from the desire to negate its hand origin. Process, inclusive
of the marks of the human hand, is therefore very important to
my work. The marks of the maker intend to convey a type of ‘humanity’
to the work.
