I
am interested in translating the traditional technique of filigree
into contemporary pieces of jewellery. I am drawn to the potential
of fine metalwork to create both symmetrical and organic forms,
but increasingly find inspiration in the natural world.
By soldering long tubes of sterling silver chenier together, I
cut them into cross sections to create patterns reminiscent of
the interior of plant stems or similar botanical forms. The patterns
created by these slices of nature are then handcrafted into wearable
items, mainly brooches, earrings and necklaces. With the addition
of gold, and the inclusion of precious stones set into the chenier,
elevate these pieces into quite unique works of art. |
