The materials I have used in this jewellery are 999 and 925 silver, 24 carat gold, nitrile, hematite, garnet and labradorite. They were chosen because of their properties, effect and strength. The silver components are cold-fitted, the o-rings and the fine silver pins create the tension that holds the work together. This means that the strength captured in the fine silver domes through the process of forging has been protected from a softening flame. The links holding the magnetic clasp in the necklace have been soldered for security.
This collection originally began in the sea as a celebration of the colour and assortment of creatures that inhabit the intertidal zones of Australia’s Southwest coast (from Narooma NSW to Apollo Bay in Victoria). But now it evokes in me not only anemones and blue-ringed octopus but also the lifeless images of divers bells, sea mines and the vast skies of Northeast Victoria where I spent my childhood. |
