Through
my work I am exploring notions of layering, wear, impermanence
and passing time. I am intrigued by the deterioration of objects,
as all things age despite developments in processes and advancements
in technology. Of particular interest are contrasts between the
‘keepsake’ qualities of precious materials and the
disposable ‘throw-away’ nature of contemporary culture.
Jewellery that wears down over time, appearing fragile and weightless,
is a prominent theme in my current work. The ‘Paper Castle’
neckpiece is playful, comprising of delicate paper-thin silver
pieces that roll in on themselves and are extruded, gaining strength
and volume through the formation of each layer. A length of silver
is gently rolled through the mill with sections of everyday bubble
wrap, creating a surface texture that reflects the undulations
of human skin.
