Moon-Yang,
imagery and motif
24
October - 7 November 2003
An
exhibition of jewellery and objects by Shine Myung-Ok Shin investigating
traditional Korean pattern work in combination with colours and
imagery unique to Australia.
Moon Yang is the Korean description for pattern but its implications
reach beyond a western understanding of the word.
Shine
reinterprets traditional patterns utilising designs that had established
a distinct language in Korea by the 6th century AD. Bold colour,
geometric, plant, animal and abstract forms are integral to Korean
object design. These patterns and motifs construct a language
that is at once both familiar and elegant to the Korean mind.
Combining this language with Australian imagery Shine forms a
new vocabulary of cultural identity which incorporates elements
of flora, fauna and landscape that impart a sense of place in
her work. |
