In my work I strive to encapsulate an understated beauty by exploring combinations of pattern and form with thin strips of paper. The process involves the calculation of measuring sequences for each strip (one brooch can include up to six strips of paper). These sequences determine how the strips are folded and need to be precisely calculated in order to achieve a successful outcome. A small scalpel blade is used to plot the measurements on the strips which are then woven on to stainless steel wire or cable. Below is an example of numerical sequences for my ‘arc’ brooch.
