Tingate Family Caravan Holiday
Brooches, neckpieces and earrings

– 30 March 2008
Steeped in 1950’s nostalgia, Mathews utilises vintage Formica and laminates from an era where the introduction of new materials and technologies was at the forefront. Widely used in furniture at the time these materials transport us back to our own family holidays, reminding us of an era when holidays meant just that; no mobile phones, no laptops.
Multilayered, this series also pokes fun at the era’s obsession with strict social expectations and rigid gender roles of the time, which seem to be so at contrast with the design push to be modern. Press
