My passions for the graphic motif of the stripe and Renaissance art seem diametrically opposed. However, when I traced the history of the stripe, I was rewarded by a convergence of these subjects. The outcomes of my research were two groups of jewellery, which explored the interplay of their sources.

In my jewellery artwork, the precise graphic image of the stripe is developed into a dynamic optical illusion - a 3D effect which arises on the work’s flat surface. In counterpoint, lines emerge and disappear on the weathered surfaces of brooches, where stripes soften and abrasion becomes the dominant process.

This evolution of my style and technique is a product of following the history of the stripe into antiquity, where the surviving remnants of my graphic stimulus are shabby but enigmatic.
