Nina Ellis

Nina Ellis completed her Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT in Gold and Silversmithing where she developed her love of fine lines and detail. Just as with nature, each line she uses is thoughtful and laboured. Nina strikes lines into the surface of the metals using handmade chisels, enjoying the irregularities of the process. No two strikes of the hammer are the same, just as the variations of each handmade piece. The love of nature is also reflected in her careful selection of gems that feature in her engagement and wedding ring collection which often features unusual colour combinations and variations.

I take delight in researching the documentation of nature, entomology collections, as well as fossil records. Botanical illustration and the two dimensional depiction of nature has an interesting history. The tiny leaves and touch of colour in the humble alfalfa sprout. The exquisite fine lines you find on close inspection of a wheat stalk or pressed flower petals. The details of botanical forms are inspirational.

Most recently Nina’s work was exhibited in Melbourne Modern, Art and design at RMIT since 1945.
